What settings should I use when configuring a Finapres NOVA’s analog outputs for use with ADInstruments data acquisition equipment?

The Finapres I/O module that comes standard on the Finapres NOVA and NOVA Plus allows users to specify the analog output voltage per measurement unit, as well as a voltage offset for both raw and calculated signals that the NOVA records. This data can then be sent out of the NOVA’s eight analog outputs (found on the left side of the unit) into a PowerLab or Instrument Interface to be viewed and recorded by LabChart in real-time. However, the NOVA’s default Analog I/O settings are not pre-optimized for collection in LabChart, so it is important to adjust them to ensure the best representation of the data within LabChart

You can make the necessary adjustments to these setting as follows:

  • From the NOVA’s home screen, navigate to the Input/Output settings by following this pathway: NOVA Main Menu> System Settings> Hardware> Analog I/O
  • On the Analog I/O Hardware settings screen, select the analog output you would like to configure and the Source for the signal you would like output on that given analog output
  • Next, change the Offset of the signal in the settings to -5 Volts.
  • Set the Scaling to the appropriate Volts/Unit for the parameter you have chosen to be output from this particular analog output.  The Volts/Units values for each parameter are located in the table below:
  • Finally, click the “Accept Changes” button in the lower right hand corner of the screen to save these settings.

Repeat this same process to configure the NOVA’s other analog outputs

The corresponding values for each parameter that should be used when setting up the LabChart Units Conversion Feature are located in the table below:

Also, the LabChart default sampling speed of 1000 samples/second and recording range of ± 10 Volts are sufficient to record any of the available parameters that the NOVA can output via its analog outputs.
