New LabTutor Experiments – Stroop Test, Cockroach Sensory Nerve & Frog Neuromuscular Junction

Go to ADResearch Go to ADEducation Go to ADPharma There are now over 50 preconfigured laboratories featuring over 160 separate exercises available for LabTutor software and PowerLab data acquisition systems. The Stroop Test, Cockroach Sensory Nerve and Frog Neuromuscular Junction experiments allow students to independently explore new physiological principles and gain experience in a range of laboratory procedures and experimental techniques.

Human Physiology – The Stroop Test

The Stroop Test replicates J.R. Stroop’s 1935 experiment to induce physiological stress in a series of student volunteers. To record and analyze this stress, each lab group uses a PowerLab with a thermistor pod to measure pulse rate and skin temperature as the volunteer completes the tests (monochrome reading, rectangle color naming, reading colored words and color naming), and measures blood pressure resting and under stress using a stethoscope to listen for Korotkoff sounds.

Animal Physiology – Cockroach Sensory Nerve

In this experiment, students record and measure extracellular action potentials from a cockroach leg. The experiment begins with instructions and diagrams that illustrate dissecting the leg from the cockroach and connecting it to the PowerLab using a Bio Amp cable and shielded lead wires. Students then measure the effect on action potential activity of stimulating the entire leg, stimulating individual spines, adjusting the angle of an individual spine’s deflection and sensory adaption after prolonged stimulation.

Animal Physiology – Frog Neuromuscular Junction

In order to explore the physiological relationship between skeletal muscle and motor nerve supply, this experiment sees students dissect and prepare a frog’s Gastrocnemius and sciatic nerve for stimulation and recording using a PowerLab and Bridge Amp. Students then separately stimulate the nerve and muscle in order to measure and analyze twitch recruitment and fatigue, and the effect of applying tubocurarine.
Example muscle contraction data for the "Twitch recruitment" exercise in the LabTutor Frog Neuromuscular Junction Experiment.
In addition to observing and analyzing the isolated tissue’s behavior, students learn the correct protocol for using a muscle holder and retort stand, and calibrating a force transducer.

Tailor Any LabTutor Experiment to Suit with LabAuthor

Like to have your students completing these experiments, but need to change something first? LabAuthor software gives you the ability to edit any aspect of a LabTutor experiment  – from the text in the background information through to the type of physiological signal being recorded in the data acquisition sections. You can even create your own, unique experiments within LabTutor’s proven interface and structure.

More Classrooms, More Languages, More Curriculums – LabTutor's Experiment Range

In addition to the Human and Animal Physiology Collections, LabTutor Experiment Collections are also available for:
